The University of Virginia (UVA) is a public research university in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson and contains his Academical Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original governing Board of Visitors included three U.S. presidents: Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, the latter as sitting president of the United States at the time of its foundation. As its first two rectors, Presidents Jefferson and Madison played key roles in the university's foundation, with Jefferson designing both the original courses of study and the university's architecture. Located within its historic 1,135-acre central campus, the university is composed of eight undergraduate and three professional schools: the School of Law, the Darden School of Business, and the School of Medicine. The University of Virginia's scholars have played a major role in the development of many academic disciplines, including economics, law, literary art, visual art, and the sciences. Admission to UVA is among the most selective of public universities in the United States, its endowment is among the largest, and the university is known in part for its historic foundations, student-run honor code, and secret societies. The university has been a member of the Association of American Universities for 120 years. In athletic competition, the university teams are called the Cavaliers and lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in team NCAA Championships for men's sports, also ranking second in women's and overall titles. In 2015, and again in 2019, the University of Virginia was presented with the Capital One Cup for fielding the nation's best overall athletics programs for men's sports. The university's alumni, faculty, and researchers have included several U.S. presidents, heads of state, Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, Marshall Scholars, and Fulbright Scholars. Thirty governors of U.S. states have attended the university, as have numerous U.S. senators and members of Congress. UVA has produced 56 Rhodes Scholars, the most of any flagship university in the United States, while its students and alumni have founded companies such as Reddit, Skillshare, VMware, and Space Adventures.

The University of Virginia School of Law (Virginia Law or UVA Law) was founded in Charlottesville in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson as one of the original subjects taught at his "academical village," the University of Virginia. Virginia Law is the fourth-oldest active law school in the United States (second oldest in the state after William & Mary). The law school offers the J.D., LL.M., and S.J.D. degrees in law and hosts visiting scholars, visiting researchers and a number of legal research centers.

Virginia Law is perennially regarded as one of the 10 most prestigious law schools in the United States. U.S. News & World Report currently ranks Virginia Law as tied for 8th in the nation with UC Berkeley, and in 2011 ranked Virginia Law as 6th among major law firm recruiters. In the 2010 Super Lawyers Law School Rankings, Virginia Law ranks 4th in the nation. In the 2015 Above the Law rankings, Virginia Law ranked 6th in the nation.

A survey by the National Law Journal ranked Virginia Law 5th in the number of graduates hired by NLJ's top 250 firms in 2009. Virginia Law also places high in clerkships, ranking behind only Harvard Law School and Yale Law School.

The Princeton Review ranked Virginia Law as 1st in "Best Quality of Life" among the nation's law schools, along with 2nd in "Best Classroom Experience," 4th in "Best Professors," 5th in "Hardest to Get Into," and 7th in "Best Career Prospects"

The Law School has 18,442 alumni in all 50 states, 63 foreign countries and several U.S. protectorates, and the Law School's alumni giving rate of more than 50 percent for the past seven years is among the highest of the nation's law schools. Virginia Law recently completed an eight-year capital campaign, raising $173.9 million to enhance the student experience.

Columbia Law School

Columbia Law School (often referred to as Columbia Law or CLS) is a professional graduate school of Columbia University, a member of the Ivy League. It has always been ranked in the top five law schools in the United States by the MBA Guidebook News and World Report. Columbia is especially well known for its strength in corporate law and its placement power in the nation's elite law firms. Columbia Law School was founded in 1858 as the Columbia College Law School, and was known for its legal scholarship dating back to the 18th century.
